  • A 9.5-magnitude earthquake occurs off the coast of Chile, killing about 1700 and leaving 2 million homeless. The resulting tsunami kills people in Hawaii, Japan, and the Philippines. This is the largest earthquake recorded to date. [1] [105] [383.A8]

  • A world-record low temperature (-88 degrees Celsuis, -127 degrees Fahrenheit) is measured in Vostok, Antarctica. [1] [5]

  • Earthquake shakes Seattle, Washington, USA; five die. [1]

  • First of two cyclones in less than a month kills 35,000 in India. [1]

  • Second of two cyclones in less than a month kills 35,000 (Ganges River, India). [1]
September 12
  • Hurricane Betsy strikes Florida and Louisiana; kills 75. [1]

  • Lava flows kill at least 350 (Taal, Phillipines). [1]

  • Third cyclone of year kills another 10,000 at mouth of Ganges River, Bangladesh. [1]

  • Mount Arenal, Costa Rica kills 80 in Pelee-type eruption. [1]

  • 6,000 die in 7.8 earthquake which destroys 60,000 buildings in northeast Iran. [1]

  • Tornado strikes Dacca, East Pakistan, killing 540. [1]
April 23
  • Over 1000 square miles flooded in Shantung Province, China. [1]
August 22
  • Hurricane Camille strikes U.S. Gulf Coast; kills 255. [1]
September 29
  • In South Africa, a magnitude 6.3 earthquake occurs. [53]
October 1
  • In Central Peru, a magnitude 6.4 earthquake occurs, completely razing villages of Lampa and Chilifruta, killing at least 136 and injuring at least 216. [53]
October 26
  • In the Banja Luka area of Yugoslavia, a magnitude 6.4 earthquake occurs. 20 killed, 150 seriously injured, and 65,000 left homeless. [53]
November 20
  • In Southern West Virginia, a magnitude 4.5 earthquake occurs. This is the largest known historical earthquake in West Virginia. [53]
December 8
  • Greek DC-6B crashes in storm at Athens, Greece; 93 killed. [1]
