  • On the day of his 52nd birthday, U.S. President Bill Clinton admits in taped testimony that he had an "improper physical relationship" with White House intern Monica Lewinsky. He also admits before the nation that night in a nationally televised address that he "misled people" about his sexual affair with Lewinsky. [19]

  • The television show Mortal Kombat: Conquest first airs in the US. [9]

  • Intel begins airing a commercial on American television entitled "Homer's Smarter Brain", featuring Homer Simpson of The Simpsons, who has his brain replaced by a Pentium II processor, turning him into a professor. [4]

May 7
  • A jury finds The Jenny Jones Show and Warner Bros. liable in the shooting death of Scott Amedure, after the show purposely deceived Jonathan Schmitz to appear on a secret same-sex crush episode. [20]

  • Mali issues 10 postage stamps depicting scenes from US TV show I Love Lucy. [612.60]
May 22
  • The television show Mortal Kombat: Conquest last airs in the US. 22 shows aired during the season. [9]
June 2
  • After decades of fighting off outside technological influences like television, the King of Bhutan allows television transmissions to commence in the Kingdom for the first time, coinciding with the King's Silver Jubilee. [20]
November 19
  • John Carpenter becomes the first top prize winner of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and breaks the record of the largest single win (US$1 million) on a United States game show. [20]
